Just $0.02, I strongly suggest you read up and know exactly what this software does. This type of array should never be used unless under very specific circumstances (which do not appear to apply to you). Not knowing anything about "openmanage" software they provide, my first concern with a non-destructive array creation is it sounds an awful lot like software raid. I have good bare metal backups but I'd just prefer not to have to use it. I was very surprised when he said I couldn't do it without destroying the data. When I called Dell I was 99% sure that the warning I was getting just applied to the new disk I was adding, but I wanted to be 100% certain. But it sounds like you agree with me that I should be able to use Openmanage to create a Raid 1 virtual disk without destroying the data. So, just to be clear, this server has never had a 2nd hard drive. This is why defragmenting hardware RAID virtual drives is pretty much a useless endeavor, the controller will put the data pretty much wherever it wants.įor your reference I have attached two links below to the manuals, the first for the SAS 6/ir, the second for the "Storage Managment System" section from the OpenManage 5.5 manual. In general, hardware RAID controllers tend to behave like a God and simply present the virtual disk to the OS as if it was a single drive, and as far as the actual managment of the physical disks, it does not care what the OS thinks or wants to do. For the sake of argument lets assume that it behaves as a hardware RAID controller. In looking into this card I can not really determine if this is a true hardware RAID controller or a Host Bus Adapter (aka Fake RAID). Storage Management should be used by experienced storage administrators who areįamiliar with their storage environment." (I added the bold) Management) enables you to perform storage tasks that are data-destructive. Also, from what I have been able to dig up on the SAS 6/ir, this card does not appear to have the capability to expand an existing array, which is in a way what you are trying to accomplish here.įrom the 6/ir manual: " NOTICE: All data will be lost upon creation of theįrom the OpenManage manual: " NOTICE: The Storage Management Service (Storage Openmanage is just a GUI extension of of the BIOS setup utility on the controller card that runs in Windows and does not really add any additional functionality above that in the BIOS setup utility. You have a single physical disk and the 6/ir is only acting as a drive controller, not a RAID controller. ![]() Your issue is that the OpenManage Virtual Disk Wizard is for managing virtual disks and at this time you do not have any virtual disks to manage. ![]()
